France on 'high alert' for terrorism on New Year's Eve

A total of 90,000 police officers will be deployed around France during the New Year's Eve celebrations, with ministers saying the country is on 'high alert' due to the threat from terrorism, as well as the possibility of urban violence. Junior interior minister Marie-Pierre Vedrenne told France Info that "the terror threat remains elevated throughout the year, but on the evening of December 31st we will be particularly vigilant". Vedrenne added: "Terrorism is something that should never be ruled out, and the aim is also to prevent all urban violence." Some towns around France are having a firework display, but an increasing number have opted for quieter celebrations. READ ALSO: Where to watch fireworks in France on New Year’s Eve✎
