The DCCC’s intervention didn’t work … In the months leading up to the primary, national media attention on the Texas primaries focused on Democrats’ surprising crop of strong candidates and large early voter turnout. In the end, 33,176 people voted in the Democratic primary; 38,032 voted in the uncompetitive Republican primary, renominating Rep. John Abney Culberson (R-Tex.). Outside of the 7th District, Democratic primaries produced runoffs or nominees with little bitterness. But in another centrist vs. conservative race, Lisa Ryan ousted Texas Rep. Jason Villalba (R), in part by attacking his nonsupport of Trump in 2016.
