When British Airways axed 14,000 jobs in response to the post-9/11 downturn in the airline industry, the carrier was outraged at suggestions that it was cutting its bloated operations under cover of the 2001 terrorist attacks. Yet BA had long needed to slim down. So it is with Jaguar Land Rover. Today’s news of thousands of job cuts has been leapt upon by Remain campaigners as the apotheosis of the evils to business of Brexit. All the hard work over the past ten years building the West Midlands carmaker into a British-based, Indian-owned champion on the world stage was being sacrificed on the altar of an internal row in the Tory party about Brussels.
