Former refugee who fled violence in Afghanistan preparing to become police officer


Fleeing from a violent past in Afghanistan, former refugee Mahboba Sakhizada arrived in NZ in 2017 without an education and unable to speak English. When Mahboba Sakhizada arrived in New Zealand after fleeing violence, she couldn't speak a word of English. The former refugee fled her home in Afghanistan to Pakistan with her young son seven years ago. ABIGAIL DOUGHERTY/STUFF Mahboba Sakhizada fled violence in Afghanistan with her young son at the age of 17, arriving in New Zealand five years later. She spent five years in Pakistan as a refugee before coming to New Zealand through the refugee quota programme.
