Member of parliament Mohamed Anwar Sadat revealed he will not run for the position of head of the Human Rights Committee during the House of Representative’s second legislative year. Sadat, who formerly led the committee before resigning on 30 August, said in a Sunday statement that during the first year the committee’s work was restricted. He added that memberships in the committee are now manipulated by the security apparatus. Sadat and parliamentary speaker Ali Abdul Aal have previously had tense conversations inside the parliament. One week before his resignation, Sadat was referred to the disciplinary committee along with 11 other MPs from the same committee for travelling to Geneva to attend an international rights conference, supposedly without prior authorisation from Abdul Aal.
