Shamsul Islam, a former national footballer, died while he was bathing at a pond in Sagarpara neighbourhood in the northern city, said the family. "Like every other day, he went bathing around 11:30am. The body was found around 1pm after a search in the pond," said Islam's brother Rafiqul. He was the second player from the erstwhile East Pakistan to play for the Pakistan national football team. In 1965, he went to Russia as part of the Pakistan youth squad.
