Former Oak Ridge psychiatric patients sue province, doctors over treatment

More than two dozen inmates of what was the maximum security Oak Ridge facility in Penetanguishene, Ont., are suing the province and two doctors for $25 million in various damages. Danny Joanisse, 62, of Niagara Falls, Ont., is one of 28 plaintiffs in a lawsuit claiming inmates, often violent offenders, were tortured instead of receiving psychiatric treatment at Oak Ridge hospital in Penetanguishene, Ont., from 1965 to 1983. The government and doctors deny wrongdoing, saying the treatment was in line with medical science of the day. “The patients were absolutely dependent on the doctors and staff of Oak Ridge for their release,” Rochon said. Xenakis is of the opinion that what happened at Oak Ridge was similar to the abusive treatment meted out to the inmates at the U.S. prison in Cuba, court heard.
