Former Kenyan President Daniel Arap Moi Ordered To Pay $10 Million To Widow Over Land Grab

ASSOCIATED PRESSA Kenyan High Court in Eldoret has ordered former President Daniel Arap Moi to pay approximately $10 million as compensation to a widow for illegitimately seizing her land. In 2007 Moi subsequently sold the land to Rai Plywood Limited, a timber firm owned by the wealthy and politically connected Jaswant Rai family of Kenya. The $10 million payout, said the judge, was “commensurate compensation as it is the current market value”. Moi became Kenya's second president in 1978 and served until 2002, and is believed to have amassed a large fortune during the period through a series of questionable transactions. Apart from being one of Kenya’s largest landowners, Moi is also one of the leading shareholders in Sovereign Group, one of Kenya’s most storied investment holding companies.
