ERBIL, Iraq—Jalal Talabani, who rose from Kurdish guerrilla commander to president of Iraq during much of the U.S.-led war in the country, died on Tuesday. Mr. Talabani’s legacy is one of staunch opposition to former Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein, and of compromise between the country’s rival political factions in the years after Hussein was overthrown in 2003.
