Tony O’Brien, director general of the HSE, said while he “hopes there will be strong competition for my post, I have my doubts at this stage”. Mr O’Brien is due to end his tenure in July, despite being repeatedly called upon to resign immediately in the wake of the CervicalCheck scandal. Fine Gael TD Kate O’Connell asked whether Mr O’Brien had ever, during his six-year tenure, told the Department of Health that the job was too big for one person. Mr O’Brien told the health committee yesterday that he was “opposed to the way the HSE was created”. Mr Harris told the committee he intended to shortly bring forward legislative proposals to provide for the appointment of a new HSE board.
