Former Councillors deserve pension

Before we enacted the 2010 Constitution, Kenyans were used to only three categories of leaders when it came to casting votes during elections - the presidency, constituencies and wards. While the first two have been getting hefty send-off perks, there has been nothing given to the Councillors and no mechanism for their pension was ever put in place. They have been discriminated against as far as social/financial protection is concerned in spite of being able to mobilize and sensitive people towards certain causes or ideologies. To downplay these grassroots operatives further, there is a world of difference between the remunerations they used to get and what the current MCAs are getting. It is a shameful state of affairs to see the majority of these former Councillors wallowing in poverty while sarcastically being referred to as leaders.
