Former All Blacks first five-eighth Robin Archer, who captained Southland to one of its great Ranfurly Shield victories, has died, aged 87. It was to be 51 years before Southland won the shield again, against Canterbury in 2009, and Archer was on hand to hail their effort. He also took over the family firm, Archer Building Contractors Ltd, and later chaired the private property and bloodstock company Archer Corporation Ltd.
