Former Alberta premier Jim Prentice among four dead in British Columbia plane crash

Former Alberta Premier Jim Prentice was killed with three other people Thursday night near Kelowna in the crash of a plane bound for Calgary, multiple sources have told Postmedia. On Friday morning, Premier Rachel Notley abruptly cancelled an event in Red Deer as word of the deaths spread. Prentice, 60, served as premier from September 2014 to May 2015 before his Progressive Conservative government was defeated in last year’s provincial election. Prior to that he had made his mark politically as a federal Progressive Conservative leadership candidate and federal Conservative cabinet minister, serving in the Indian and Northern Affairs, Industry and Environment portfolios. Orman first met the future premier while working with him on Brian Mulroney leadership campaign in 1983 and then they helped run Don Getty’s Calgary leadership.
