One of Deadwood’s most satisfying beatdowns comes in its Season 1 finale, when Timothy Olyphant’s Seth Bullock confronts his lover Alma’s father. And then takes several more, leaving his face a bloodied mess, like a deflated balloon on the ground. “All right,” Bullock groans, a surprising desperation lacing his voice. Anyone who wants to put your daughter or her holdings in jeopardy, you show ’em how to get here. And therein lies the complication to Olyphant’s characters: They’re conflicted creatures, wielding a powerful tool with their anger that’s kept in check by a heart that wants to do good.
