An estimated 1.5 million members of ethnic minorities including Uighurs, Kazakhs, Kyrgyz and Huis have been placed inside the camps in the past two years, according to researchers and foreign governments. Companies such as Adidas, Hennes & Mauritz, Kraft Heinz and Coca-Cola have been linked to the forced labor and assimilation campaign in Xinjiang. The documents offer proof that the so-called “vocational training centers” were intended from the beginning to serve as centers of internment for ethnic minorities. Other companies, including Japanese retailers Muji and Uniqlo, have come under fire for advertising their use of cotton supplies from Xinjiang. Adrian Zenz, a leading researcher on Xinjiang, argued in a paper and a Foreign Policy article this week that it is in fact not possible.
