Bloomberg reported today that teams from both companies have hatched a strategy for bringing self-driving vehicles to market. The broader alliance between Ford and VW also includes commercial vehicles, pickup trucks and electric-vehicle development. On the self-driving tech front, the shared equity arrangement is a good fit for both companies. VW CEO Herbert Deiss said in January that he preferred to own, rather than license self-driving tech. The growing alliance with VW will enable Ford to make cuts in Europe.
