The sentencing hearing is expected to conclude today for a Toronto police officer convicted of attempted murder in the shooting death of Sammy Yatim. James Forcillo arrives for the first day of his sentencing hearing on May 18, 2016. The police officer was convicted of attempted murder in the July 2013 death of Sammy Yatim. He was found guilty of attempted murder for shooting Yatim again six seconds later while he was lying on his back on the floor of the streetcar, paralyzed and dying. Forcillo’s lawyers are seeking to have the mandatory minimum sentence for attempted murder with a restricted firearm — five years — found unconstitutional so that Forcillo could receive sentence of two years less a day on house arrest.
