The political froth today about immigration into the United States centers on whether to keep people out or let them in. It will be painfully clear in the next few years that our economy cannot function without more people. We are at full employment today in the United States and the U.S. Department of Labor says the number of unfilled jobs is well north of 5 million. Birth rates have been in decline for decades as has been the rate of labor growth. Robotics and artificial intelligence may offset some of the looming labor shortage, but neither are long-term solutions.
