For this family, eco-celebrations have been tradition for 200 yrs

MUMBAI: The Bombay high court recently expressed the need to spread awareness about using eco-friendly material to make idols for Ganesh Chaturthi. For the Joshi family, if it is a Ganesh idol, it has to be eco-friendly. Their ancestors, like Moreshwar Joshi, who practised ayurveda, had in 1820 sculpted a Ganesh idol using mud from their backyard. The family tradition was followed by Govind Joshi and Krishna Joshi. The practice has been to worship the idol for 11 days and then bid him a farewell by sprinkling water on the idol. "Any shortage of mud is collected from the backyard or from family and friends,"said another family member Jitendra. The home-made Ganesh idol has been attracting people from neighbouring villages.
