Deaths in long-term-care homes account for an estimated 82 per cent of all COVID-19 deaths in Canada. A recent Star investigation revealed that for-profit long-term-care homes in the province have had far worse outcomes than non-profit and public facilities. EXTENDICAREWith facilities in seven provinces, Extendicare says it is the largest operator of long-term-care homes in Canada. Province-wide, there has been an infection rate of 5.6 and a fatality rate of 1.5 in all long-term-care homes. Harris’ Progressive Conservative government removed minimum staffing levels and established a competitive bidding process for long-term-care homes in the 1990s.
