For World Wildlife Day 2019, The United Nations Hones In On The Problem Of Ocean Plastic

Today is the United Nations General Assembly's 6th Annual World Wildlife Day, which commemorates the establishment of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES). One of the key aspects of this campaign is combatting plastic pollution. Over half of all ocean plastic originates on land, oftentimes getting washed into rivers before being swept out to sea. Plastic pollution affects animals of all sizes from microscopic zooplankton to large whales and sharks. If the global rate of ocean plastic pollution continues on its current trajectory without any efforts to curtail it, some models forecast that the oceans could have more plastic than fish by 2050.
