It was midway through Saturday’s morning session at the 42nd Ryder Cup at Le Golf National, and Mickelson was the only United States player on the practice range. After sitting out Saturday morning’s session, Mickelson wanted to play in the afternoon. But for the second time in 12 Ryder Cups, Mickelson spent the day as just another tourist. Mickelson received the news about his afternoon benching in a text from Furyk, who acknowledged that Mickelson no doubt envisioned a larger role.
