For Oregon State, an improbable path to redemption

ColumnistWhen Oregon State football coach Jonathan Smith gathered his coaches in the locker room at halftime last Saturday afternoon at Folsom Field in Colorado, he really wasn’t thinking about winning the game. “At that point, I was thinking that we were only down two scores and there was still a quarter to play,” Smith said. Then, Oregon State needed five plays to score what proved to be the winning touchdown in overtime. The Beavers’ horrific season ended with a 69-10 loss at Oregon, and they finished 1-11. That was Oregon State’s 28th consecutive losing season, dating to 1970 when a Dee Andros-coached team had gone 6-5.
