France, political history’s greatest revolutionary, laid its Fifth Republic to rest last Sunday. The revered general’s legacy was threefold: he reprogrammed the political system, he inspired Europe’s unification, and he ended French colonialism. However, as history’s ironies go, the French retreat was followed by what angry French voters now decry as a counter-invasion. Well history cannot be rewound, but a new France can reverse its course, by spearheading an international Marshall Plan for North Africa’s development. In due course this effort will spawn millions of new jobs, and immigration’s direction — not only from North Africa, and not only to France — will be reversed.
