Football is a wonderful environment for creating lasting friendships as well as warm memories of life's finer moments. Maybe only one major trophy has been won in my 57 years of following them for the Chronicle but I have a lifetime of glowing memories. It was special to meet up again with Paul Thompson, a centre-forward who played for Stevenage against Newcastle and Shearer in the FA Cup at St James' Park. Paul Proudlock, a midfielder of genuine vision and silky touch who famously scored a worldie for Carlisle against England's most capped player Peter Shilton in a League Cup tie. Soccer can be cruel but it can also create dreams and friendships, memories and magic moments.
