Football, cricket and rugby chiefs to face government questions on how coronavirus has ravaged sport


Football, cricket and rugby chiefs face a grilling from MPs next week on how coronavirus has impacted their sports. They will give evidence remotely on Tuesday, before UK Sport chair Katherine Grainger and Sport England chief executive Tim Hollingsworth answer questions on Wednesday. The inquiry will inform MPs on which sports may need more financial support after the Government announced a £16million bailout of rugby league on Friday. It is the first time the Government has stepped in to rescue a sport, in an intervention which was hailed by organisers of next year’s Rugby League World Cup in England. ‘The funding is undoubtedly recognition of the importance of the sport and next year’s Rugby League World Cup.
