The paedophile football coach Barry Bennell was confronted by one of his victims, asking him “Barry, why?” before he was jailed for 30 years. Bennell, 64, smiled as he was sentenced for 50 child sex offences between 1979 and 1991 against 12 boys aged from eight to 15. The former Manchester City scout and Crewe Alexandra coach had groomed boys with takeaways and promises that he could help them to play for England. He was described by Judge Clement Goldstone, QC, at Liverpool crown court yesterday as “the devil incarnate” who left a “trail of psychological devastation” in his wake. Bennell was convicted last week after a trial lasting five and a half weeks.
