The size of Fonterra’s climate impact is being challenged, after international research calculated the dairy giant’s carbon footprint may be double what’s been reported. Christel Yardley/Stuff About 10 per cent of Fonterra’s carbon footprint comes from processing milk. For the managed farms, Fonterra counts 100 per cent of emissions – so both milk and meat – towards its reported carbon. For the supplying farms, the dairy co-op only counts 85 per cent of these farm’s emissions. That brings us to its reported carbon footprint of 22.2m tonnes.
