The law has been harshly criticized by a major donor to the University of Alabama, Hugh F. Culverhouse. Culverhouse has donated so much money to the University of Alabama that it named its law school after him. Alabama has announced that it is returning his $26.5 million donation and removing his name from the law school. Nevertheless, it is difficult to believe that Culverhouse’s strong and public opposition to the Alabama abortion law did not play a significant role in the university’s decision to return tens of millions of dollars. Alabama’s record on protecting the lives of pregnant women is abysmal.
