Flyover: VACB quizzes officials

The Vigilance and Anti-Corruption Bureau (VACB) on Tuesday questioned officials of Roads and Bridges Corporation of Kerala Limited (RBDCK) as part of its investigation into the shoddy construction of the National Highway flyover at Palarivattom in Kochi. The Oommen Chandy government had contracted a New Delhi-based firm in 2014 to construct the flyover to mitigate the congested traffic in Kochi. The VACB would also seek answers from government engineers why they had sanctioned the contractor his part-bills without questioning the purported use of low-quality cement and an insufficient amount of construction grade steel. Officials said the functioning of the Public Works Minister at the time would also come under VACB scrutiny, if needed. Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan had inaugurated the flyover in May 2016.
