One person has died, though the flu may not have been a major contributing factor in the death, according to the provincial Department of Health and Wellness. Howard Njoo, the deputy chief public health officer for the Public Health Agency of Canada says it could be a "potentially a serious flu season," though he cautioned it is too early to tell for sure. Efficacy questionedNjoo said each year's vaccine is based on what the World Health Organization predicts will be the prevalent flu strain in the Northern Hemisphere. According to the Public Health Agency of Canada, the majority of flu cases are attributed to the H3N2 strain, and this year's vaccine is not expected to be very effective against it. Howard Njoo, deputy chief public health officer for the Public Health Agency of Canada, says even when the flu vaccine is less effective it is still better than no protection at all.
