Florida flood insurance fell before Hurricane Ian hit

SANFORD, Florida — Florida homeowners had their flood insurance coverage cut in the years before Hurricane Ian poured up to 15 inches of rain on the state, flooding coastal and inland areas. Only a small number of homes in two of Florida’s worst-hit counties are covered by flood insurance. The percentage of protected homes is higher in coastal areas that have suffered the most damage, but is still more than 50% in just one of the affected counties, according to an analysis by Neptune Flood, a private flood insurance provider.
