Fleeing driver makes watery bid for freedom in Nelson

Police had to take to the water to apprehend a disqualified driver attempting to swim to freedom. A driver fleeing police in Nelson made a bold attempt to swim for freedom, before having his plans scuppered by the Nelson Coastguard. A police spokesman said officers were alerted to an incident on Rocks Rd at about 1.20pm on Thursday, when a disqualified driver failed to stop. The chase took an unusual turn when the man ditched his car and took to the ocean. Coastguard Nelson president Pete Kara said he wasn't sure where the man was trying to swim to.
