In 2016, the then Minister of Trade and Industries, Dr. Ekwow Spio-Garbrah, undertook a thorough evaluation of various interests in the trade-war between local cement manufacturers and importers. The exercise was after local cement manufacturers cried on government over Nigeria, China cement products flooding the market which had a gross impact on their businesses. The minister, justifying the action being taken, said the move by Ghana was in conformity with the international trade practices and sub-regional pacts. He added that government needs to also ban the importation of foreign cement products into the country.
