Flashback: The day New Zealand's voting changedElections NZ via NZhistory.net.nz MMP publicity material from 1996. God walked among us with an electoral system from the heavens. After David Lange's Labour Party beat Rob Muldoon's National Party in 1984, Lange arranged a royal commission into the electoral system. In the first, people overwhelmingly voted for a more proportional electoral system and MMP, they said, was the way to go. Lee's Christian Coalition fell just short of winning any party seats (It got 4.33 per cent of all party votes and needed five per cent) and failed to get any electorate seats.
