Chennai: Bird watchers and naturalists were in for a surprise on seeing more than 100 greater flamingos at Perumbakkam lake on the western side of Sholinganallur junction. The Nature Trust founder KVRK Thirunaranan, who records the migratory birds at the lake, said a week ago the flamingos have landed here. "August is not part of the migratory season yet the birds have come," he said.A fresh water body, the Perumbakkam lake has an abundance of fish and a water level suitable for flamingos. One of the main reasons for the Perumbakkam lake's good water quality is a low sewage inflow. However, all these ideas were dropped and the lake added to the Pallikaranai marshland as its watershed area. The four-hectare land adjoining the lake and earmarked for constructing the taluk office too will be added to the lake.
