The Sobey Art Award exhibition opens at the gallery on Oct. 6. The Sobey Art Award, the Canadian visual-arts world equivalent of the Giller Prize for fiction, announced its five finalists Wednesday, shining the spotlight squarely on a handful of young Canadian artists in the run-up to the anointing of a winner in November. The award, which doles out a total of $100,000 in prize money, chooses its finalists from long lists compiled by region. The winner takes home $50,000. Taken in-house last year by the National Gallery of Canada after 13 years under the wing of the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia, the exhibition now takes place annually on the country’s biggest stage.
