ADDIS ABABA – Five passengers were killed in a head-on collision between two buses in Amhara Region’s Debre Markos city, police said on Sunday. An undisclosed number of passengers have also been taken to the city’s referral hospital for treatment, according to the Debre Markos city police statement. The Amhara region saw a relatively high jump in the rate of deadly traffic accidents in recent months. More than 2,290 people, including 820 deaths, were victims of road accidents in the first 11 months of the just concluded fiscal year, showing a 14.14% year-on-year increase. Drivers were to blame for 81% of traffic accidents, as per data from the region’s police commission.
