Fishing and whitebaiting is not permitted at alert level 4. There has been some confusion about whether or not fishing and whitebaiting is permitted during alert level 4, with reports across the country of people being spotted doing both. However, the Covid-19 website clearly states no recreational fishing or whitebaiting is allowed during alert level 4, except for Māori customary fishing and food gathering. Fishing and whitebaiting is allowed to resume in alert level 3, as long as Covid-19 safety regulations are followed. Department of Conservation director of health and safety Harry Maher said its stance was whitebaiting or fishing is not permitted generally under alert level 4.
