Fishing boat crew eat Irrawaddy dolphin, captain arrested

Marine and Coastal Resources Department officials and Navy officials, charged with monitoring fishing boats in Prachuap Khiri Khan province, arrested the captain, Sing Khiewphayup, 52, at the Charoenlarp fishing pier in Muang district at about 6pm on Monday. The officials took the action after a group of environmentalists spotted the dissected carcass of the dolphin and alerted officials. The captain said he prohibited his crew from catching dolphins and they must release caught dolphins. In this case, he said he found out about the dolphin after it had been cut up for cooking.
