Alex Newell, widely known for starring in “Glee,” became the first nonbinary performer to win the Tony Award for best-featured actor in a musical. “I look at the word ‘actor’ as one, my vocation, and two, genderless,” they said. Karen Olivo and Sara Ramirez, who later came out as nonbinary, previously won Tony Awards in the featured actress in a musical category. Also, last year, the Tony Award for best score went to Toby Marlow and Lucy Moss for “Six,” and Marlow is nonbinary.
