Firms urged to address data privacy

ADDRESSING data privacy challenges in the Covid era should mainly involve the companies' efforts to master the complexity of "ethical" data handling as well as establishing "firm" level of accountability, an expert said. In a virtual meeting organized by the Rotary Club of Alabang and Makati North, National Privacy Commissioner Raymund Liboro hightlighted the critical role that private companies play in addressing a wide range of data privacy challenges today. This is where the Republic Act 10173 or the Data Privacy Act (DPA) plays a key role, Liboro said. While the world gets the fullest benefits of extracting data, it is also being confronted with extreme risks, Liboro said. Globally, 48 percent of data privacy issues are caused by external forces, particularly hackers, while the higher 52 percent by internal glitches or human error, Liboro cited.
