It was a pleasant Thanksgiving weekend for many, but it was less so for those in the District and Montgomery County who were forced from their homes by fire or dangerous gas. In the District, a “dangerously high level” of carbon monoxide created by a boiler problem prompted evacuation Saturday of an eight-story building at 1001 Third St. SW, authorities said. Levels of the potentially deadly gas were high enough to prompt a three-hour, unit-by-unit search to ensure that nobody had been overcome, said D.C. fire department spokesman Vito Maggiolo. The building was ventilated and eventually cleared for residents’ return, Maggiolo said. Piringer said that he expected the Red Cross and building management would help them with temporary housing.
