The Government firearms buyback has ended - and police are warning of consequences for continued defiance. More than 56,000 prohibited firearms have been handed in during the firearms buy-back scheme and about $102 million paid out in compensation. The official gun buy-back scheme ended on Friday after months of debate, occasional protests, and major buyback events around the country. Police just had three months to get the firearms buy-back process in place and start communicating with owners. If the person caught with a banned gun is a firearms licence holder, that licence could be revoked.
