MELBOURNE — Australia’s fire and drought-ravaged east will suffer continued hot and dry conditions this summer, increasing the chances of severe weather events, the country’s weather bureau said on Thursday. The Bureau of Meteorology warned the country could expect more heatwaves and little rain in the east during the summer, which runs from December through February, following one of the driest springs ever. The hot, dry spring led to an early start to Australia’s bushfire season, with people killed and more than 500 homes destroyed since September. Temperatures across most of the country are highly likely to be warmer than average during the day and night, the bureau said. However coastal areas of Western Australia were showing increased odds of wetter than average conditions, the bureau said.
