Fire destroys house in Mayfield, mid-CanterburyFire has destroyed a house in the mid-Canterbury town of Mayfield. The wooden building was well ablaze when crews arrived at 4.10am on Sunday, Fire Service southern communications shift manager Riwai Grace said. A member of the public alerted the Fire Service just before 4am, and said the house was empty. Fire crews wearing breathing gear did not attempt to enter but surrounded the building and "drowned it" with several hose reels, Grace said. The fire was extinguished by 7am and a fire investigator is working at the scene.
