Fire danger continues for firefighters Sunday after a busy Saturday

Hot spots and flareups kept area firefighters busy Sunday after multiple fires Saturday swept across fields in Gage County. Multiple agencies, including the Beatrice Rural and Filley Rural fire departments, responded to a fire shortly after 1 p.m. Sunday south of East Lilac Road and east of South 66th Road to the west of Rockford Lake State Recreation Area. The National Weather Service issued a hazardous weather outlook for Gage County on Sunday, citing low humidity and high winds bringing high weather danger to the area between noon and 5 p.m.On Saturday, the weather service issued a red flag warning for eastern Nebraska, with strong winds, low relative humidity and high temperatures contributed to extreme fire danger. There were at least three fires in Gage County on Saturday, the largest fire 7 miles east of Beatrice and another northeast of Pickrell, said Lisa Wiegand, Gage County's emergency manager. There was a third, smaller fire burning along south of Odell on Southwest 61st Road, Wiegand said.
