A slash pile fire near Glenduan, north of Nelson, began on Saturday around midday. Fire crews have contained a fire at a slash site near Hira. Nelson Fire Station senior officer Selwyn Curtis said rural crews were still at the site, but had contained the blaze, which started on Saturday just after midday. However, by the time crews reached the site the blaze was well underway, and took about an hour to contain. The location of the fire was a slash site (a pile of forestry debris), which meant the blaze was “deep rooted”, Curtis said.
