Fire and Emergency NZ have contained a fire near the Rangitata River Bridge. Firefighters have stopped a roadside fire in Rangitata, near Timaru, from reaching the railway lines. A Fire and Emergency New Zealand spokesman said the fire started under the Rangitata River Bridge, on State Highway 1, about 6.15pm. As of 9.45pm, one lane was blocked by a car thought to have a flat battery, the spokesman said. He said train control staff checked the train bridge about 9.05pm and found it safe, with trains beginning to run again soon after.
