An early morning fire inside an elderly care center in the southern county of Pingtung has claimed four lives while injuring at least 55, according to authorities on Friday. The fire broke out at just before 5 a.m. at the Nanmen elderly care center in Hengchun Township's Caopu Road with rescuers moving desperately to evacuate the 150 seniors residing in the 208 room building. Footage showed staff and rescuers wheeling out shocked residents on their beds. Firefighters are still investigating the cause of the fire and are not ruling out electrical wires catching fire. In March, a senior home fire killed four in Taoyuan's Longtan District while six people were killed in a fire at a elderly care facility in New Taipei in July last year.
